Who has time for a blog/facebook/twitter/etc.?

So, I’m starting my own blog today. Can you say “Hello diary?” Who in the hell has time for all this stuff? Facebook, Twitter, blogs, My Space – it’s all just a giant time-sucking waste. Do you really have time to “follow” me? I’m flattered but what value does it bring to your life? Is your own life so uneventful that you prefer to spend time reading about mine?

Or is all this “social networking” stuff just an ego trip for people who think they have something important to contribute and believe everyone will want to read their dribble? Look, we all live our lives. Some people manage to make a huge splash; most of us make barely a ripple. We are all at some level significant and insignificant. Get over it!

My dad once said the internet was “nothing but a hula hoop.” I believe he was mostly wrong, but partly right. The internet as a whole is NOT a hula hoop, but elements of it certainly are.
