How to Create an Effective Corporate Video (and spend your budget wisely!)

Choosing a vendor to create your corporate video is not as easy as it might appear. With these simple steps you can make an educated decision and end up with an effective corporate video, delivered on time and on budget.

1) Avoid the hobbyist.

These days everyone seems to be calling him or herself a “storyteller” or “filmmaker” just because they’ve mastered the mechanics of shooting and editing video. In the business, we call these people hobbyists. And there are a ton of them. True filmmaking is a craft – something that takes many years to hone. Just because someone says he or she is a storyteller doesn’t mean he or she can effectively communicate your message. Beware of the hobbyist; hire a professional.

2) Look at their track record.

Experience – not just a few years experience – is critical. Why? Because there is a litany of critical elements involved in video production and dozens of potential pitfalls. Just because a company has created a handful of videos doesn’t mean they’ll be able to successfully work with a CEO who is uncomfortable on camera, capture a great comment from a customer testimonial, or know how to deal with a foreman who doesn’t really want a video crew filming in his work area. Hiring a video production company with experience in the corporate world can make the difference between an end product for which you are applauded or a horrible experience that makes you fear for your future in the company.

3) Video is not a widget.

Your task is not as simple as finding the cheapest manufacturer to make a widget to your specifications. Your goal is not simply to find someone to “make a 5-minute video.”  You are looking for a company that can effectively communicate a message through video.  You want a seasoned communication partner. Ask for specific examples of a video production company’s ability to create videos that connect to the intended audience and produce results.

4) Substance over glitz or “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Effective communication can often take the form of breathtakingly beautiful imagery, but sometimes a bare bones production can be just as effective. The key is finding a communication partner who can do either or both. Video production companies are notorious for putting together flashy “demo reels” with snippets from various projects they’ve worked on. These visual roller coaster rides are fun “eye candy” but not very substantive. Ask to see some complete videos. No, you don’t have to watch them all the way through, but watching a longer clip allows you to judge the consistency of the overall production quality.
